Classic Coin Conditioner & Preservative Coin Cleaner Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What’s the difference between “conditioning” a coin and “cleaning” it? Conditioning removes surface contamination (dirt and grime) and provides a barrier for future contamination; "cleaning" usually involves the use of harsh chemicals that removes not only contamination, but the coin’s metal too...thus negatively impacting the coin's value.

  2. Will my coin grade higher? No. Your coin won’t go from a VG to an XF or similar jumps in grade. However, your coin will become more visually appealing and will not loose value as a result of "polishing" or "brightening"...which is a no-no for serious coin collectors.

  3. What happens to coins submitted to ANACS? Coins submitted to ANACS  (American Numismatic Association Certification Service ) will not be considered "cleaned", which means Classic Coin Conditioner is not detected as a "cleaner" that changes the surface of the coin.

  4. Will my coin increase in value? Even though we think Classic Coin Conditioner is an excellent product, we do not claim it will make your coin increase in value.

  5. How does Classic Coin Conditioner compare to other products? Other products leave a oily residue that never seems to be completely removable or it “shines” the coin to an unnatural glaze. Classic Coin leaves no residue once the coin is gently wiped with a soft (microfiber) cloth.

  6. What are the ingredients of Classic Coin Conditioner? That’s a trade secret, of course, but the primary ingredients are a direct replacement for the ingredient in the former Harco Blue Ribbon Conditioner product that’s no longer sold.

  7. Is Classic Coin Conditioner safe for the environment? Yes, absolutely. In fact, the EPA has approved all the components for use in all states - including the south coast of California. However, please do not pour CCC down the drain for flush.

  8. How much Classic Coin Conditioner is required to apply to my coins?A little goes a LONG way – a two ounce bottle will treat hundreds of coins.
  9. Will Classic Coin Conditioner remove Verdigris? Yes, Verdigris is a greenish or bluish discoloration in the metal, with copper being the most susceptible of all metals. Classic Coin will easily remove the verdigris without damaging the finish or value of the coin.

  10. Do I need special hand or eye protection when using it? Classic Coin Conditioner is safe for the environment and for you. But wearing gloves and glasses is always a good idea when using any type of solvents. We’d recommend you wash your hands after using it, although the ingredients are not harsh.

  11. Will Classic Coin scratch my coin? No, Classic Coin Cleaner & Conditioner does not contain any abrasives or components that will scratch the surface of the coin.

  12. How much polishing will it provide? Classic will not polish the surface of the coin. It will just remove contaminants, dirt and oils.

  13. Will it remove fingerprints? Classic will not remove the actual print but it will remove the oil associated with the fingerprint. If the fingerprints are fresh, it may be able to remove some if not most of them... if the fingerprints have been on the coin for a while, and the oils have saturated the coin, then it probably won't.  CCC removes the surface body oils well, but once the body oils have saturated the coin, they're pretty much ingrained into the metal.  CCC will certainly enhance the coin's appearance and protect it from further degeneration.

  14. Can I use Classic Coin Conditioner (CCC) in my ultrasonic cleaning unit? Yes, because CCC is not flammable - you can safely use it in your ultrasonic cleaning unit.

  15. Why is Classic Coin's solution clear? Harco Blue Ribbon was kind of brownish. Classic Coin uses an improved formulation in which all of the components including the protectant are clear.

  16. What is the difference between Classic Coin Conditioner and e*Z*est ® Coin Cleaner? E*Z*EST® is a liquid tarnish remover for gold, silver, and copper coins in a jar. This cleaning solution and "dip" for is for collectors and dealers who want to significantly "brighten" the coins. Classic Coin Conditioner do not brighten or remove tarnish and thus will not change the value of the coin.
  17. What is the difference between Classic Coin Conditioner and MS-70® Coin Cleaner? MS-70 is industrial strength coin cleaner. MS-70 uses "a blend of industrial detergents and surfactants designed to remove surface contamination from metal" but it unnaturally brightens coins. Some collectors might use it on silver or nickel, but not on copper. Classic Coin Conditioner is safe to use on silver, brass, copper & nickel.
